The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), through the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), aims to achieve hydrogen production of 198,408 tons per annum (tpa) by 2025. Domestic hydrogen demand for 2025 is projected at 19,270 tpa.
“I believe this target is realistic, as PLN is already producing 124,000 tpa. So, reaching the 198 ktpa target by 2025 is feasible,” said Alhaqurahman (Faiq) Isa, Head of the Hydrogen Team at ESDM, during a focus group discussion on Tuesday (Dec 17).

For 2035, the Ministry targets hydrogen production of 1,693 ktpa, while projected demand is 593 ktpa, with the industrial sector accounting for the largest share at 563 ktpa.
Regarding ammonia, the Ministry targets production of 9,491 ktpa by 2035, with projected demand of 6,550 ktpa, all of which is expected to come from the fertilizer sector.
The Ministry plans to gradually increase the production of clean ammonia while reducing ammonia production from fossil fuels. “Currently, we are the third-largest ammonia exporter globally, but most of it still comes from fossil fuels,” Faiq said.
