Youth organizations concerned with Newmont's alleged bribery

Two youth organizations in Sumbawa regency expressed concerns over anonymous leaflets stating that the task force formed by the regency's legislature for copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara had received bribes from the company, Lombok Post reported.

The Communication Forum of Samawa Youth and Students and the Foundation of Human Studies said in statements if the allegation was true, the legislature's task force had betrayed the conscience of the public and violate the existing standards of morality.

According to the anonymous leaflets, the task force had received bribes amounting to Rp 135 million from Newmont.

The organizations further said if the allegation was true, the public would lose confidence in the legislature and Newmont as the legislature would always make policies in line with the wishes of Newmont. The legislature might also follow the wishes of Newmont in choosing the new regent for the regency.

The organizations said they would investigate the case and if the allegation was true, they would give vote of no confidence to the legislature and ask the task force's members to resign.

Both organizations demanded the members perform sumpah pocong (oath taking) to prove they have not receive any bribes from Newmont. (*)
