President Prabowo orders natural resource reserves to follow JORC Code

President Prabowo Subianto has instructed his ministers to begin calculating and classifying Indonesia’s natural resource reserves in accordance with the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Tuesday.

“We just held a meeting with the President to discuss our natural resource reserves, including coal, bauxite, nickel, tin, and other minerals. He ordered us to apply the JORC Code to these reserves,” Bahlil told reporters after a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

First introduced in Australia in 1989, the JORC Code sets minimum standards for the estimation, classification, and public reporting of mineral exploration results, mineral resources, and ore reserves. The code has become a global reference and has undergone several revisions to align with international best practices.

According to Bahlil, producing JORC-compliant reserve estimates will also support the country’s mineral downstreaming agenda, which aims to increase domestic investment. “This can serve as part of our efforts to boost downstreaming in the mining sector and, in turn, enhance investment into the country,” he said.
