President Prabowo Subianto's inaugural state address emphasizing energy sovereignty as a national priority has received high public confidence, according to a recent survey conducted by Petromindo. The quantitative study, carried out from October 31 to November 18, 2024, reveals that the energy sector's key stakeholders rated the president's vision with an average score of 4.01 out of 5, reflecting optimism about its potential.
The survey involved 201 respondents aged 18 and above, primarily professionals from the oil and gas, mining, and power generation industries. Respondents expressed mixed but hopeful sentiments regarding the appointments of Bahlil Lahadalia as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Yuliot Tanjung as Deputy Minister, assigning scores of 3.48 and 3.53, respectively.
Sectoral Hurdles Remain Prominent
Despite the positive reception of the new leadership, the survey highlighted significant challenges that hinder the energy sector. Licensing complexities and regulatory issues were identified as the most pressing concerns, impacting over 55% of respondents. Other notable issues include suboptimal resource management, the sluggish transition to renewable energy, and difficulties in downstream development.
"Regulatory clarity and streamlined processes are urgently needed to unlock the sector's potential," noted a respondent from the oil and gas industry, which rated the president's vision highest at 4.15.
Public Expectations for the MEMR Leadership
Respondents emphasized three key areas for the MEMR to address: improving governance and transparency (32.9%), advancing renewable energy and sustainability (27%), and simplifying bureaucratic processes (24.6%). Calls for transparent licensing and reduced corruption underscored the public's hopes for systemic reform.
Optimism about the sector's ability to meet national energy targets over the next five years remains moderate, with scores hovering around 3.46 for key areas such as renewable energy development and energy sovereignty.
A Path Forward
As the Prabowo administration seeks to prioritize energy sovereignty, public confidence offers a promising foundation. However, addressing persistent regulatory and resource management issues will be pivotal to sustaining momentum and achieving long-term goals in Indonesia's energy landscape.
