President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated 26 power plants across 18 provinces, with a total capacity of 3.2 gigawatts (GW), and transmission networks on Monday, January 20, 2025.
The ceremony took place at the Jatigede Hydropower Plant (PLTA Jatigede) in Sumedang Regency, West Java. The facility, with a capacity of 2x55 MW, utilizes water from the Jatigede Reservoir.
In his speech, Prabowo emphasized the importance of energy independence as a cornerstone for national development.
“Energy is vital. We need reliable energy sources to become a modern industrialized nation. I am confident that in five years, Indonesia will no longer need to import fuel,” Prabowo said.
The 26 power plants represent an investment of Rp 72 trillion, with 89% of their capacity derived from renewable energy sources.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, also highlighted the integration of environmentally friendly technologies in the projects, including gas and renewable energy plants. These initiatives are aligned with the government’s target to achieve a 23% renewable energy mix by 2025.
“Indonesia's total electricity capacity currently stands at 101 GW, with 75 GW managed by state-owned PLN. Of this, renewable energy contributes less than 16%. These projects are an important step toward achieving our clean energy targets,” Bahlil explained.
Transmission networks
The initiative also includes the construction of 11 transmission networks spanning 739.7 kilometers and substations with a total capacity of 1,740 MVA, aimed at enhancing electricity distribution efficiency.
“Future power plant developments must be accompanied by adequate transmission networks to meet community needs without wastage,” Bahlil added.
To ensure nationwide electricity access, Bahlil outlined plans to electrify approximately 6,700 villages that currently lack electricity, with an estimated budget of Rp 48 trillion over the next five years.
