PLN Indonesia Power tests green ammonia co firing at Labuan coal plant

PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) has conducted Indonesia’s first green ammonia cofiring trial at the Labuan 2x300 MW coal-fired power plant  in Banten, marking an effort to reduce coal consumption and emissions in the electricity sector.

The pilot test, conducted in collaboration with Japan’s  IHI Corporation and state fertilizer maker PT Pupuk Kujang, involved a 3% ammonia co firing rate over eight hours, using 50 tons of green ammonia derived from green hydrogen. The test demonstrated a coal reduction of 4.5 tons per hour, translating to a potential annual CO₂ reduction of 70,640 tons.

PLN Director of Corporate Planning and Business Development Hartanto Wibowo emphasized that the Labuan ammonia cofiring project is the first of its kind in Indonesia and will be further developed to support energy transition goals. PLN IP CEO Edwin Nugraha Putra highlighted the significance of ammonia cofiring in reducing carbon emissions while maintaining reliable power supply.

The trial received support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), with Deputy Commissioner Masanori Tsuruda stating that Japan remains committed to assisting Indonesia’s energy transition and hopes the project will serve as a model for the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC).

Under the collaboration, Pupuk Kujang supplies green ammonia, produced from hydrogen plants operated by PLN Indonesia Power, while IHI Corporation provides ammonia burner technology. The test marks an early step in Indonesia’s shift toward lower-carbon energy solutions while ensuring coal plant operations remain stable.
