India’s coal imports in January 2025 saw a slight rise of 1.23 percent, reaching 21.37 million tons (MT), compared to 21.11 MT during the same month of the previous fiscal year.
However, the overall coal import volume remained flat during the April-January period of FY25, totaling 222.67 MT, according to data compiled by mjunction services Ltd, a B2B e-commerce platform, as reported by The Economic Times.
For the April-January 2024-25 period, non-coking coal imports stood at 141.18 MT, a decline from 146.86 MT in the same period last fiscal year. Coking coal imports also saw a slight decrease, with 45.88 MT imported, compared to 47.32 MT during the same period last year.

In January 2025, non-coking coal imports totaled 12.33 MT, lower than the 13.40 MT imported in January 2024. On the other hand, coking coal imports rose to 5.23 MT, up from 4.50 MT in January 2024.
“There is subdued demand for imported coal despite softer seaborne prices, primarily due to abundant stock in the domestic market. We expect this trend to persist until the onset of summer,” said Vinaya Varma, MD & CEO of mjunction.
Meanwhile, the country's cumulative coal production during the April-January period saw a 5.88 percent increase, reaching 830.66 MT, compared to 784.51 MT in the same period of the previous year.
