The Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, in collaboration with the World Resources Institute Indonesia (WRI Indonesia), has developed a roadmap for the decarbonization of the nickel industry as input for the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
Vivi Yulaswati, the Deputy Minister for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources at Bappenas, emphasized that the roadmap's development involved various stakeholders, including policymakers, industry representatives, academics, and relevant associations.
The partnership between the Ministry of Bappenas and WRI Indonesia underscores a commitment to supporting the decarbonization of the nickel industry.

"The development of the nickel industry decarbonization roadmap involves all stakeholders in addressing challenges and implementing solutions for sustainable nickel industry practices. In this process, the Ministry of Bappenas welcomes collaboration with WRI Indonesia as an independent research institution that will provide comprehensive contributions, including research, data analysis, and policy recommendations to support emissions reduction throughout the nickel industry supply chain in Indonesia," said Vivi in a statement on Friday.
She revealed that decarbonizing the nickel industry would significantly contribute to the economic transformation agenda aligned with Indonesia's Golden Vision 2045. Additionally, economic transformation is targeted as a key strategy in the medium-term planning document to lift Indonesia out of the middle-income trap.
"The existence of this decarbonization roadmap for the nickel industry can further align economic ambitions with emission reduction targets in line with Indonesia's commitments under the Paris Agreement," added Vivi.
This can be achieved through the creation of a sustainable nickel industry ecosystem that prioritizes environmental concerns and ethical practices. This aligns with the Indonesian Government's mission to generate high value-added products and compete globally.
