PT Energi Nusa Mandiri, the parent of North Kalimantan low-rank coal producer PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara, said that its integrated semi coking coal plant in the province is expected to be completed this year.

Energi Nusa Director Rayendra Pradipta told Petromindo.com that construction progress of the semi coking coal plant and combined-cycle power plant has currently reached 92 percent.

The integrated downstream project will produce 600,000 tons per year of semi coking coal, 50,000 tons of coal tar, and generate 30 MW of electricity.

The company will mix its low rank coal with high calorie coal of 6,000 GAR in a 50:50 mixture to produce semi coking coal and residues in the form of liquid and gas, which will be partly converted into coal tar and partly used as feedstock to generate electricity.

Rayendra said that the company has yet to secure long-term supply contract of the 6,000 kcal/kg coal from domestic producers including Adaro MetCoal and ITMG.  “We’re still in discussion to get supply from other sources,” he said.

The integrated semi coking coal plant will be run by subsidiary PT Mega Energi Khatulistiwa.  The company plans to sell the semi coking coal to domestic smelters and export, while the coal tar will be marketed at home.
