Senggigi, Lombok - From December 3rd to 10th, 2023, the global mining geology community focused its attention on the "15th Annual Convention of the Indonesian Society of Economic Geologists (MGEI)," held in Senggigi, Lombok - a captivating destination. This event, a collaboration between MGEI and co-host PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara, served as a crucial moment for updates and collaboration in the mining geology sector.
The convention centered around the theme, "Bridging Discovery to Resource Extraction Optimization: Exploring Brownfields, Enhancing Production Geology." Over 29 prominent speakers from national and international levels participated in seven sessions that not only inspired but also addressed challenges and opportunities in the industry. The speakers detailed steps towards deeper exploration, resource extraction optimization, and production improvement, creating a profound and relevant dialogue in the mining sector.
Impressive Event Lineup
This comprehensive program included four pre-convention workshops covering topics from Geostatistics, Sampling Theory and QAQC to Coal Resource Evaluation Verification. Three post- convention sessions discussed important topics such as Mine-to-mill reconciliation, strategies in Geometallurgy program development, and the Anaconda and geological structure mapping Bootcamp.
The event not only focused on technical aspects but also provided space for social interaction. The ice- breaking dinner attended by Assistant 3 Setda NTB, Mr. H. Wirawan S.Si., MT, and enlivened by the local band Nuansa, added warmth and camaraderie among the participants.
Keynote presentations on December 5-6 offered a wealth of interesting materials, accompanied by a leisure trip program to various tourist attractions in Lombok, attended by the families of the event participants. This provided a special attraction for participants bringing family members, offering an opportunity to relax and enjoy a vacation in Lombok. The event series concluded with a field trip to the Hu'u Project from December 15-18, 2023, in collaboration with PT Sumbawa Timur Mining as the host.
Highlight of the event and Presence of Distinguished Figures
The highlight occurred during the two main convention days, opened with a gong-striking ceremony by Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Mr. Muhammad Wafid. The event was witnessed by several distinguished figures, including Mr. Azaria Indrawardhanan, representing Mr. Ir. Imam Sinulingga Dadan Kusdiana Msc., the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as representatives from PT Amman Mineral Mr. Hery Sulistyo, Mr. STJ Budi Santoso as the chairman of the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI), Mr. Andyono B. Santoso as Acting Chairman of the Indonesian Society of Economic Geologists(MGEI), and Mrs. Nadya Fauzia Puspitasari as the chairwoman of The 15th MGEI Annual Convention 2023.
Exhibition and Product Innovation: Attractive Prizes for Geology and Mining Professionals
The event also featured an exhibition involving 16 exhibitors, including mining companies, drilling, mining software, and organizations such as MGEI and IAGI. The exhibition was supported by product presentations on the stage in the exhibition area, providing a platform for exhibitors to introduce their latest technologies to the participants.
Exhibitors actively participated in quizzes and door prizes with attractive prizes, including a three- month free license for Leapfrog modeling software by Seequent and field equipment packages worth more than 10 million rupiahs, sponsored by PT Jakindo Perkasa, adding excitement and euphoria to the event.
Creative Competition of Ideas in the Student Research Poster Contest (SRPC) and the Spirit of Shaping The Future of Mining Sustainability
This event paid special attention to the younger generation in the exploration and mining industry through the SRPC. Out of 63 abstracts gathered from across Indonesia, 15 finalist teams successfully presented their research results in the poster exhibition area. Support from PT DNP Konsultan Indonesia with a total prize of 15 million rupiahs along with transportation and accommodation costs, provided additional motivation. This year's champion emerged from Gajah Mada University with the title "Characterization of Mineral-bearing Structures, Tectonic Sequences, and Their Impact on Low- Sulfidation Epithermal Deposits in the Sembowo Area, Pacitan, Indonesia."
Beyond serving as a platform for presenting the latest developments in the mining industry, this event actively involved the younger generation. The participation of volunteer students from various universities in Indonesia demonstrates MGEI's commitment to stimulate the interests and aspirations of the younger generation in the future. This not only creates opportunities for learning and professional development but also emphasizes their crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable mining.
Success in MGEI Chairman Election
In this Annual Convention, MGEI also conducted the election of the leader for the 2024-2027 period. The result showed that Mrs. Rosalyn Wulandari was elected as the new Chairwoman of MGEI. Mrs. Rosalyn Wulandari will lead MGEI definitively after the 16th MGEI Annual Convention in 2024. This election is not only a significant moment in this event but also reflects MGEI's commitment to involve and empower its members in taking an active role in the direction and goals of the organization.
