Indonesian Nickle Industry Outlook under 2020 Mining Law
By : IKI & CoalAsia
Speakers
Prihadi Santoso, Head of the Indonesia Processing and Refinery Industries Association (AP3I).

Background
Indonesia is ranked as the world’s biggest nickel producer in the world with the country’s total reserves of 21 million tons, representing about 24 percent of the world’s nickel reserves of 89 million tons, according to latest data of the U.S. Geological Survey.
The annual report of U.S. Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries in 2020 published recently showed that Indonesia nickel mine production reached 800,000 tons in 2019, an increase from 606,000 tons in previous year.
Nickel is found in two types of deposits of nickel lateritic and magmatic sulfide deposits. Although nickel Laterites make up 70 percent of the country’s nickel reserves, few of them become producing mines.
Indonesia has banned export of nickel ores since January 2020 to encourage more value-added production in the country, forcing nickel miners to sell their nickel ore output to domestic smelters.
The webinar organized jointly by PT Indeks Komoditas Indonesia (PT IKI) and Petromindo Group would explore the future of nickel industry, nickel processing and smelting industry in Indonesia under the new Mining Law of No.3/2020.
