Overview

A number of mining companies have started gradually shifting to use electric heavy equipment in mining operations as part of decarbonization programs in mining operations.

IDX-listed and state-owned coal miner PT Bukit Asam Tbk is currently using 7 Shovel Electric and 40 Haul Dump (HD) Hybrid heavy equipment in mining operations, with a capacity to reduce emissions by 17,000 tCO2e per year.

The company said that the operational costs of using electric vehicles are more efficient than oil-fueled vehicles with Shovel Electric for example having an average 30 percent more efficiency, while the HD Hybrid is 70 percent more efficient in operating costs.

The use of electric vehicles will continue to be increased. This year, PTBA plans to operate 15 electric buses. The use of an electric Light Vehicle (LV) is also being studied.

IDX-listed integrated nickel mining firm PT Vale Indonesia Tbk also plans to gradually convert all of its existing mining trucks into electric-based trucks with the first electric vehicle being tried at the Sorowako mine.

The gold and copper mining firm, PT Freeport Indonesia which has switched from open pit mining to underground mining in Papua Province since 2020 already uses the electric trains in their operation with emissions reduction is expected by around 80,000 metric tons per year, or the equivalent of operating 50-60 haul trucks.

The Indonesian Heavy Industry Association (Hinabi) said that heavy equipment production in the first quarter of this year increased by 49.11 percent to 2,113 units compared to 1,417 units in the corresponding period of last year.

Hinabi said that demand for heavy equipment from the mining sector has been increasing in line with the trend of rising mining commodity prices. On the other hand, there is also a carryover of a number of requests for heavy equipment in 2021 which were previously not fulfilled.

The webinar will explore the future opportunities of electric heavy equipment in mining operations – what are the challenges ahead? How do heavy equipment makers respond to the expected increasing demand of electric heavy equipment?
