"Unlocking the Future of Bullion Banks in Indonesia"
Indonesia, as the 20th largest gold exporter in the world, is strategically positioned to leverage its abundant gold resources for greater domestic value. President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized the importance of down streaming mining commodities, following the successful example of nickel, to boost the national economy. Indonesia holds approximately 4.41% of the world's total gold reserves, ranking 6th globally. According to data from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia's total gold resources reached 16.4 billion tons in 2023, containing 12.2 thousand tons of gold metal. Meanwhile, gold reserves amounted to 3.8 billion tons, containing 3,300 tons of gold metal.
Presiden Prabowo Subianto launched bullion bank as an important history for Indonesia at February 26, 2025. At the launch, the president said bullion banks could help the state save foreign exchange by allowing the entire gold supply chain to stay onshore. Regulator (OJK-Financial Service Authority) has approved licenses to operate as a bullion bank for Pegadaian, a pawnshop subsidiary of state lender Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).
Bullion Bank Opportunity

The conference titled “Unlocking the future of bullion banks in Indonesia” will explore how the establishment of Bullion Banks can be a game-changer, offering solutions to overcome challenges and strengthen Indonesia's standing in the global gold market.
What is a Bullion Bank, and why should you care? Unlike traditional banks, Bullion Banks specialize in trading precious metals like gold and silver, providing services such as trading, financing, and gold storage. They hold physical gold bars and offer instruments representing gold ownership, opening new avenues for investment and economic development. Bullion banks are usually divisions/ subsidiaries of a universal bank under corporate banking/ investment banking. They offer specialized services – e.g., financing, sales, trading – to participants in the bullion market in physical bullion or bullion-based contracts (paper bullion).
Bullion Banks have been established in various countries, including Hongkong, China, and India, which are the world’s largest gold jewelry market. The banking system that supports gold trading is considered one of the solutions to overcome the challenges and develop India’s position in the global gold market.
Indonesia has the potential to further develop its gold industry including through the establishment of a bullion bank, which can provide various services related to gold trading, financing, and gold storage.
