The recent outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) has changed the world’s coal demand and supply trend including in China, the biggest thermal coal producer and consumer in the world.

While China has managed to put the pandemic under control after months of lockdown in many cities with many factories are then back to normal since the beginning of April, the country’s coal mining industry still faces challenges post-pandemic period, although this also provides the opportunities, including for Indonesia.

“Opportunities are always open for Indonesian coal to China market,” said Jimmy Deng, General Manager of Indonesia Branch of China Coal Solution in a recent interview with CoalAsia Magazine, adding that Indonesian coal price is very much lower than Chinese domestic coal, making China imported lots of Indonesian coal despite of abundance of its domestic production.

Indonesia is the world’s largest thermal coal exporter with the main market of China and India.

The second webinar series on coal market, jointly organized by CoalAsia and Petromindo.com, would explore the current state of China coal market and trend of coal export to China in the aftermath of Covid-19 and the potential impacts on Indonesian coal.
